How much data does YouTube use?

YouTube is one of the hungriest apps on any phone or broadband connection. A single hour of video can swallow anywhere from a few dozen megabytes to several gigabytes — and the difference comes down almost entirely to the quality you watch in. This calculator uses widely published average bitrates for each YouTube quality level to estimate your real usage from your daily watch time.

Data usage per hour by quality

As a rule of thumb, expect roughly these amounts per hour of watching:

  • 144p: about 40 MB per hour — fine for audio-like listening.
  • 240p–360p: about 170–310 MB per hour.
  • 480p: about 560 MB per hour — the classic data-saver choice.
  • 720p HD: about 1.1 GB per hour.
  • 1080p Full HD: about 1.9 GB per hour.
  • 1440p / 4K: about 4.5–9 GB per hour — beautiful, but brutal on data caps.

The formula

Data used = data rate per hour × hours watched

Pick your quality's hourly rate from the list above and multiply it by your watch time. That is all the calculator does — no hidden math.

Example

Watch 2 hours of 720p HD every day: 1.1 GB × 2 = 2.2 GB per day, which is about 15.4 GB per week and 66 GB over 30 days. Switch that same habit to 480p and it drops to roughly 1.1 GB per day — half the data.

Tips to use less data

  • Cap playback quality in the YouTube app settings (for example, 480p on mobile data).
  • Download videos over Wi-Fi for offline watching instead of streaming them twice.
  • Turn off autoplay so one more episode does not start by itself.
  • Use YouTube's "Data saver" mode when you are on a limited plan.

Figures are estimates based on typical YouTube bitrates; actual usage varies with the video itself.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the YouTube Data Usage Calculator

How much data does YouTube use per hour?
Roughly 40 MB at 144p, 560 MB at 480p, 1.1 GB at 720p HD, 1.9 GB at 1080p Full HD, and up to 9 GB at 4K.
Does watching in 4K use a lot more data than 1080p?
Yes — about four to five times more per hour. Dropping from 4K to 1080p is the single biggest data saving you can make on YouTube.
How can I reduce my YouTube data usage?
Lower the default playback quality on mobile data, download videos over Wi-Fi for offline viewing, and switch off autoplay.
