X (Twitter) Data Usage Calculator
Estimate X (Twitter) data usage — scrolling, videos, Spaces, uploads — and check if your monthly plan can handle it.
Why X quietly burns through your data plan
X looks like a text app, but it stopped being one years ago. Autoplaying videos start the moment you open the timeline, photos load in full resolution, and Spaces streams live audio for as long as you stay. Unlike a movie you deliberately press play on, X spends data in the background of your attention — ten minutes of idle scrolling with autoplay on can cost more than an hour of reading articles. That is why so many people hit their data cap mid-month and blame “the phone”, when one app did most of the damage.
How this calculator estimates your X data
The calculator breaks your usage into five streams and multiplies each by a realistic per-minute or per-item rate: scrolling the timeline (about 2 MB per minute), watching videos (about 8 MB per minute), listening to Spaces (about 0.8 MB per minute), publishing text posts (about 5 KB each), and uploading photos or videos (about 3 MB each on average). Then it applies your media-quality setting — Data Saver shrinks everything to roughly 60%, High quality pushes it up to 140%. Multiply by the days in your month and you get a monthly total in MB and GB, plus the single activity that costs you the most.
A worked example
Take Sarah, who scrolls X for 45 minutes a day, watches 20 minutes of video, listens to 10 minutes of a Space, posts 5 text posts and uploads 2 photos — on Standard quality, 30 days a month. Scrolling costs 90 MB, video 160 MB, Spaces 8 MB, posts a negligible 0.03 MB, uploads 6 MB — about 264 MB a day, or 7.92 GB a month. On her 20 GB plan that is 38.7% of the cap, comfortably in the Light zone with 12.26 GB to spare. Switch her to High quality with two hours of daily video and the same habit jumps past 31 GB — more than triple her old plan.
Five ways to keep X cheap on mobile data
Turn on Data Saver in X’s settings to stop autoplay and compress images. Disabling video autoplay alone cuts most users’ X data in half. Use X on Wi-Fi for Spaces and long video threads, and keep mobile sessions text-only. Set a daily screen-time reminder so a “quick check” does not become an hour of video. Finally, re-run this calculator after any settings change — the biggest-consumer line shows you exactly which habit to attack first.
