Video Call Recording Storage Calculator

Recording Zoom or Teams calls? Estimate how much cloud storage your weekly recordings will use each month.

Why call recordings pile up faster than you think

An hour-long meeting feels like nothing — until you hit Record every single day. Platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet save your sessions as compressed video files, and at 1080p that compression still costs roughly 1.8 GB for every hour of conversation. Record five one-hour calls a week and you have silently added about 9 GB to your cloud drive. Most people only notice when the "storage full" warning pops up, usually minutes before an important meeting starts.

How the storage estimate works

The math behind the estimate is simple: weekly storage equals calls per week multiplied by average hours per call multiplied by the data rate of your recording quality. Standard 720p recordings run about 0.9 GB per hour, full HD 1080p about 1.8 GB per hour, and 4K recordings can reach 7 GB per hour. The calculator multiplies the weekly total by 4.33 — the average number of weeks in a month — to project monthly usage, then divides your plan's free storage by that monthly figure to estimate how many months pass before the space fills up.

Worked example: five hours of 1080p calls a week

Imagine you record five calls a week, each an hour long, at 1080p. That is 5 × 1 × 1.8 = 9.0 GB per week, or about 39.0 GB per month. On a 200 GB plan, your free space lasts 200 ÷ 39.0 ≈ 5.1 months — a Manageable verdict, meaning you have time but should schedule a quarterly cleanup. Run those same calls in 4K instead and monthly usage jumps to about 151.6 GB, so the same 200 GB would be gone in roughly 1.3 months — a Tight verdict that calls for immediate action.

Tips to keep recordings under control

Record at 720p unless you genuinely need full HD — it cuts storage roughly in half with barely visible difference for talking-head meetings. Download recordings to an external drive and delete them from the cloud once they have been reviewed. Share one recording link with the team instead of letting every attendee keep their own copy in their drive. Check your platform's retention rules too: some plans auto-delete cloud recordings after 30 to 120 days anyway. And switch off auto-recording for casual standups — reserve it for client calls and meetings where decisions are made.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the Video Call Recording Storage Calculator

How much storage does one hour of Zoom or Teams recording use?
About 0.9 GB per hour at 720p, 1.8 GB per hour at 1080p, and up to 7 GB per hour at 4K. Calls with heavy screen animation or shared video use a little more; mostly static slide presentations use a little less.
Do my cloud recordings count against my storage quota?
Yes, on most platforms. Zoom cloud recordings count toward your Zoom cloud limit, Google Meet recordings land in Google Drive, and Teams recordings live in OneDrive or SharePoint — all of them draw from the same quota as your documents and files.
How long should I keep old call recordings?
For most teams, 30 days is enough: decisions are made, action items assigned, and the recording has done its job. Archive anything with legal or compliance value, then download and delete the rest from the cloud. Check your company's retention policy first — some industries require longer.
