Signal Data Usage Calculator

Estimate how much mobile data Signal uses each month — messages, photos, calls, and downloads — and see if it fits your data cap.

Why Signal quietly uses more data than you think

Signal feels light because texts are tiny — but the app adds up fast once photos, voice messages, and calls enter the picture. Unlike some mainstream messengers, Signal prioritizes privacy over server-side trickery, so there is less behind-the-scenes optimization of your data bill. Media you send still travels through encryption the same way it arrives, which means a photo shared with ten contacts costs you the same data whether one person or all ten open it. And because Signal never shows ads or preloads a sponsored feed, every megabyte it uses is something you chose to send or receive.

How this calculator estimates your usage

The math is simple per-unit arithmetic. Each text message is counted at roughly 0.5 KB — negligible on its own. Voice messages run about 0.4 MB each, photos about 0.5 MB each, and video messages about 3 MB per minute. Audio calls use around 0.8 MB per minute (about 48 MB per hour) while video calls are far heavier at roughly 8 MB per minute (about 480 MB per hour). Your daily file downloads are added as-is. The calculator totals everything into a daily figure, multiplies by the days in your billing month, and then shows your share of your data cap — plus which activity is the biggest consumer, so you know exactly where to cut back.

Worked example — Maya's group-chat habit

Take Maya, who sends about 100 texts, 10 voice messages, and 20 photos a day, receives 5 video messages, talks 30 minutes on audio calls, spends 15 minutes on video calls, and downloads about 50 MB of shared files. Her daily total comes to 223.1 MB — dominated by the 120 MB of video calls. Over a 30-day billing month that is about 6,691.5 MB (6.53 GB). On her 10 GB plan, Signal alone eats 65.3% of the cap, leaving 3.47 GB to spare — a verdict of "moderate usage." The single biggest lever she has is cutting video calls: switch half of them to audio and her monthly total drops by almost 2.7 GB.

Five ways to trim your Signal data

First, download shared photos and files while you are on Wi-Fi instead of letting them auto-download on mobile data. Second, prefer audio calls over video calls when your cap is tight — a video call uses about ten times the data of an audio call. Third, in Signal's Data and Storage settings, choose a smaller media quality for auto-downloads on mobile data. Fourth, keep group video calls short or drop your camera when you are only listening. Fifth, remember that Signal Stories and disappearing-message media still download fully before they expire — skipping them saves real megabytes.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the Signal Data Usage Calculator

How much data does a Signal video call use per hour?
About 480 MB per hour at the standard rate of 8 MB per minute. A 30-minute video call uses roughly 240 MB, while an audio call of the same length uses only about 24 MB — one-tenth the data.
Does Signal use less data than WhatsApp?
Roughly the same. Both use efficient modern codecs for calls (about 0.8 MB per minute for audio, 8 MB per minute for video). The bigger difference is in media habits — photo and video sharing behavior matters far more than which app you use.
Do Signal text messages use any meaningful data?
Almost none. A text is about 0.5 KB, so even 100 messages a day is only 0.05 MB — rounding error on any plan. Photos, videos, and calls are what actually move your data bill.
