Reddit Data Usage Calculator

See how much mobile data Reddit uses — scrolling, videos and GIFs — and check whether it fits your monthly data plan.

Why Reddit quietly eats your data

Reddit looks like a text website, but it is not really text anymore. Open the app for a few minutes and it starts loading image posts, GIFs, and autoplaying videos — all in high resolution by default. On mobile data, a casual browsing habit can quietly add up to several gigabytes a month, and most people only notice when their plan runs out early.

The sneaky part is autoplay. Videos in your feed start playing the moment they scroll into view, even if you never tap them. Each one you scroll past costs data. Add a few minutes of actually watching videos and your daily usage can triple.

How the estimate works

This calculator breaks Reddit usage into two parts: feed scrolling (posts, images, GIFs and autoplayed clips) and deliberate video watching. At Standard quality we use 3.0 MB per minute for scrolling and 9.0 MB per minute for video — realistic averages for a modern phone screen. Data Saver mode multiplies both by 0.6, High quality by 1.5.

Your daily total is multiplied by the number of days you use Reddit each month, then compared with your data plan. The result shows which part of your habit is the biggest consumer, so you know exactly where to cut.

A worked example

Take Sara, who scrolls Reddit for 45 minutes a day and watches 20 minutes of videos, all at Standard quality. Scrolling: 45 x 3.0 = 135 MB. Videos: 20 x 9.0 = 180 MB. That is 315 MB a day, or about 9,450 MB (9.23 GB) over 30 days. On her 20 GB plan that is 46.1% of her cap — a "Light" verdict, with 10.77 GB to spare. The calculator also flags video watching as her biggest consumer, so switching videos to Data Saver would be her single biggest saving.

Five ways to use less data on Reddit

First, turn off video autoplay in the app settings — this is the biggest single saving for most people. Second, switch to Data Saver quality when you are on mobile data and save High quality for Wi-Fi. Third, avoid re-loading the same posts over and over; open what you want to read and move on. Fourth, skip long videos on cellular and watch them on Wi-Fi instead. Finally, check your phone's data-usage screen once a month and compare it with this estimate — if the numbers drift apart, something else is eating your plan.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the Reddit Data Usage Calculator

How much data does Reddit use per hour?
At Standard quality, about 180 MB per hour of feed scrolling and about 540 MB per hour of video watching. Data Saver cuts both by roughly 40%, while High quality raises them by about 50%.
Does turning off autoplay really save data?
Yes — autoplayed videos and GIFs are the biggest hidden cost. A few minutes of passive scrolling past autoplaying clips can add hundreds of megabytes a day without you watching anything.
Is Reddit heavier on data than other social apps?
It sits in the middle. Reddit scrolling uses far less per hour than TikTok or YouTube, but more than text-heavy apps. The real comparison depends on how much video you watch — heavy video watchers should treat Reddit like a video app.
