Phone Hotspot Speed Split Calculator

Split your phone hotspot fairly. Enter its speed and device count to see each device's real share.

Your hotspot speed is not each device's speed

When your phone shows 60 Mbps on a speed test and three laptops join its hotspot, nobody gets 60 Mbps. The phone's radio serves one device at a time in rapid rotation, the hotspot protocol itself eats roughly 15% in overhead, and background phone activity steals more. What is left gets split between every connected device - and the split is only fair when nobody hogs the line.

How the split is calculated

This tool takes your hotspot's measured speed (run a speed test on a connected laptop, not on the phone itself), subtracts about 15% for hotspot and protocol overhead, and divides the rest equally among your connected devices. Equal shares are the honest baseline: in practice one device streaming 4K will grab more than its share, so treat the per-device number as the fair amount, not a guarantee.

Worked example

A phone hotspot measures 60 Mbps with 3 devices connected. After 15% overhead, 51 Mbps remains, so each device gets about 17.0 Mbps. That comfortably covers HD streaming and video calls on every device. But the same phone at 15 Mbps with 6 devices connected leaves each with about 2.1 Mbps - below the 3 Mbps an HD video call needs, so calls will stutter unless devices take turns.

Tips for a faster shared hotspot

Keep the phone plugged in and cool - thermal throttling quietly cuts hotspot speed. Use the 5 GHz hotspot band instead of 2.4 GHz when devices are nearby; it is much faster at short range. Turn off auto-updates and cloud photo sync on connected laptops, and set video calls to 720p instead of 1080p when sharing. If one person must present, let everyone else drop video and keep audio only.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the Phone Hotspot Speed Split Calculator

Why is my hotspot slower than my phone's own speed test?
The phone tests its direct cellular link, but hotspot mode adds Wi-Fi overhead, NAT, and CPU load on the phone. Expect 10-20% less on connected devices even with just one device joined - this tool uses 15% as the baseline.
Can two people video-call on one hotspot?
Yes, if the per-device share stays above about 3 Mbps each for HD, or 1.5 Mbps for SD. Measure the hotspot speed, count the devices, and check the split - if it is tight, have one person use audio-only.
Does 5 GHz hotspot really help?
At close range, yes - 5 GHz carries far more speed than 2.4 GHz. But its range is short and it drains the battery faster. Use 5 GHz when everyone sits near the phone, 2.4 GHz when devices are spread across rooms.
