Offline Downloads Storage Planner

Plan offline downloads for trips: pick movies and episodes in SD, HD, or 4K and see if they fit your phone's free storage.

Why offline downloads fill your phone so fast

A single 4K movie from Netflix or Disney+ can swallow 15 GB — more than half the free space on many phones — while the same movie in SD is barely 1 GB. Downloads pile up quietly: a season of a show here, two movies for the flight there, and suddenly your phone is begging you to delete photos before you can take any new ones. The real problem isn't that storage is small; it's that you can't see the total until it's too late. Each app also rounds sizes differently and caches extra data, so eyeballing it never works.

How the planner works

This tool adds up the storage you need before you download anything. Enter how many movies and episodes you want, pick the quality — SD (about 1 GB per movie, 0.35 GB per episode), HD (4 GB per movie, 1.5 GB per episode), or 4K (15 GB per movie, 5 GB per episode) — and enter how much free storage your phone actually has right now (check Settings > Storage). The calculator multiplies it out, shows the per-type breakdown, and tells you straight: it fits, with how much to spare, or it's too big, and by how many gigabytes. No surprises at the boarding gate.

A worked example

Say you want 5 movies and 12 episodes for a long trip, in HD, and your phone has 30 GB free. Movies need 5 × 4 = 20.0 GB, episodes need 12 × 1.5 = 18.0 GB, so the total is 38.0 GB. That's 8.0 GB more than you have — the verdict is "Too big." Drop the same list to SD and it shrinks to 5 × 1 + 12 × 0.35 = 9.1 GB, which fits comfortably with room to spare. That's the power of checking first: one quality change, and the whole trip's entertainment fits.

Tips for trips

First, check your real free space, not the total — the phone needs breathing room, so keep at least 2 GB free. Second, SD is fine on a phone screen; most people can't tell SD from HD on a 6-inch display. Third, download over Wi-Fi before you leave — hotel Wi-Fi is where good intentions go to die. Fourth, delete finished episodes as you watch; most apps do this automatically if you turn the option on. And finally, re-run the planner before each trip — libraries change, and so do your plans.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the Offline Downloads Storage Planner

How much storage does a Netflix offline movie use?
Roughly 1 GB in SD, 4 GB in HD, and up to 15 GB in 4K per movie — the exact number varies by title and app. This planner uses typical values; if an app shows a different size, adjust your free-space margin accordingly.
Why can't I tell SD from HD on my phone?
Phone screens are small, so the difference between SD and HD is much harder to see than on a TV. For offline watching on a phone, SD saves about 75% of the space with almost no visible loss.
Do downloads expire?
Yes — most streaming apps give you 30 days after downloading and 48 hours after you start watching. Plan around your trip dates, not a month ahead, so nothing expires mid-flight.
