Why the advertised price isn't the real price

Internet providers advertise a low "starting at" price that almost nobody actually pays for the whole contract. The promo rate usually lasts 12 months, then the bill jumps to the standard rate. On top of that come installation fees, monthly router or modem rental, and sometimes paperless-billing discounts that disappear if you pay late. Comparing two plans by their headline prices is comparing two mirages. The only number that matters is the true monthly cost over the full contract term — every dollar you will pay, divided by every month you are committed.

How the true cost is calculated

The math is simple once every charge is on the table. Total cost = (promo price × promo months) + (regular price × remaining months) + installation fee + (equipment rental × all contract months). True monthly cost = total cost ÷ contract months. The calculator also shows how much extra you pay versus the advertised price, so you can see exactly how much the fine print costs you.

Worked example

Take a plan advertised at $40/month: a 12-month promo at $40, then $65/month for the rest of a 24-month contract, a $99 installation fee, and $10/month router rental. Promo period: $40 × 12 = $480. Post-promo: $65 × 12 = $780. Installation: $99. Equipment: $10 × 24 = $240. Total = $1,599 over 24 months, so the true monthly cost is $66.63 — that is $26.63 a month more than the advertised $40, or $639 extra over the life of the contract.

Tips to lower your real bill

1. Buy your own modem and router. At $10 a month rental, a $120 purchase pays for itself in under a year and the gear usually works with your next provider too.
2. Ask for the regular price in writing before you sign, and find out exactly when the promo ends.
3. Compare the true monthly cost of 12-month and 24-month deals, not the headline prices — a longer promo can make the longer contract cheaper.
4. Stack autopay and paperless billing discounts, which are often $5–$10 off per month.
5. Mark the promo end date on your calendar and call to renegotiate — retention offers are real.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the Internet Contract True Cost Calculator

Does a $10 router rental really matter?
Over a 24-month contract it adds $240 — nearly four months of the advertised $40 price. Buying your own router for around $120 usually pays for itself in the first year.
My provider raises prices every year. Does this tool handle that?
Enter an average of the regular price you expect over the contract to get a close estimate. For exact precision, run the calculation once per contract year with that year's price.
Is a 12-month or 24-month contract better?
It depends on the promo. A long promo on a 24-month deal can give a lower true monthly cost, but you lose flexibility if prices drop. Run both scenarios and compare the true monthly cost side by side.
