Google Meet Data Usage Calculator
Estimate how much data Google Meet video calls use per hour, week, and month — by quality, meeting size, and call hours.
Why Google Meet eats more data than you expect
A video call is a two-way stream: while you watch everyone else, your own camera is uploading constantly. That is why an hour of Google Meet in HD can use close to a gigabyte, and group calls cost even more — every extra video tile on your screen is another incoming stream. Most people discover this the hard way, halfway through the month, when their mobile data pack suddenly runs dry.
Meet also adapts quality to your connection automatically. On strong Wi-Fi it quietly pushes you toward 720p or 1080p, which looks great but burns data three to six times faster than 360p. If you join most meetings from your phone, those "invisible" quality upgrades are probably your biggest data leak.
How this calculator estimates your usage
The math is simple once you know the per-hour rates. Google Meet uses roughly 0.3 GB per hour in SD (360p), 0.9 GB per hour in HD (720p), and 1.8 GB per hour in Full HD (1080p) for a one-to-one call. Audio-only calls use only about 0.03 GB (30 MB) per hour.
Group calls get a multiplier — 1.3x for small groups of 3 to 5 people and 1.6x for larger groups — because you download everyone's video, not just one person's. Multiply the per-hour figure by your weekly Meet hours and the weeks in your month, and you get your real monthly cost in gigabytes.
Worked example: a week of remote meetings
Take a typical remote worker: 5 hours of Meet per week, one-to-one calls, HD 720p quality. That is 0.9 GB x 1.0 x 5 = 4.5 GB per week, or 18 GB over a four-week month. A 2 GB mobile data pack would cover only about 2.2 hours of those calls — less than half a workday of meetings.
Drop the same schedule to SD 360p and the month costs just 6 GB instead of 18 GB. That single settings change saves 12 GB every month — often the difference between a cheap plan and an expensive one.
Practical tips to cut Meet data use
First, lower your resolution: in Meet settings, set both Send and Receive resolution to 360p whenever you are on mobile data — it is the single biggest saver. Second, turn your camera off in meetings where you mostly listen; you drop to the audio-only rate of around 30 MB per hour. On the mobile app you can also turn off incoming video for maximum savings.
Third, join long listen-only meetings by phone dial-in instead of the app. And finally, save group calls — the most expensive kind — for Wi-Fi, and keep mobile data for quick one-to-one check-ins. Run your own numbers above before your next billing cycle starts.
