FaceTime Data Usage Calculator

How much data do FaceTime calls use? Estimate video vs audio, group calls and weekly hours against your data pack.

Why FaceTime data matters on a capped plan

FaceTime is free in the sense that Apple charges nothing for the call — but every minute still travels as data. On Wi-Fi that costs you nothing extra. On cellular, it eats into your mobile data pack, and iPhone users on small plans are often surprised at the end of the month. Video calls are the hungriest: an hour of HD FaceTime video moves around 150 MB, while audio-only calls sip roughly 25 MB per hour. Group calls multiply the cost because your phone exchanges video with several people at once.

How this calculator estimates your usage

Choose your call type (HD video, standard video, or audio only) — the per-hour rate is built in from typical FaceTime bitrates. Then say whether your calls are one-to-one or group calls (groups use about 1.6× the data), how many hours a week you spend on FaceTime, and how many weeks to count per month. Add your data pack size and monthly cap, and the calculator shows your weekly and monthly totals, how many FaceTime hours your pack covers, and what share of your cap FaceTime takes.

Worked example

Take 5 hours of HD video FaceTime a week, one-to-one, over 4 weeks, with a 2 GB data pack on a 100 GB plan. That is 0.15 GB per hour × 5 = 0.75 GB a week, or 3.00 GB a month. Your 2 GB pack covers about 13.3 hours of calling — a little over two and a half weeks — and FaceTime takes just 3.0% of your cap: light usage.

Tips to use less FaceTime data

Make long calls on Wi-Fi, switch to audio-only when you are on mobile data, and remember group video calls cost noticeably more than one-to-one chats. In iPhone Settings under Cellular you can see exactly how much data FaceTime has used, and you can turn off cellular access for FaceTime entirely if you only want it on Wi-Fi.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the FaceTime Data Usage Calculator

How much data does FaceTime use per hour?
Roughly 150 MB per hour for HD video, 90 MB for standard video, and 25 MB for audio-only calls. Group calls use about 1.6 times more than one-to-one calls at the same quality.
Does FaceTime use mobile data on Wi-Fi?
No — on Wi-Fi, FaceTime uses your broadband connection and none of your mobile data. It only eats your data pack when you are on cellular, which is why long calls are best made on Wi-Fi.
How can I reduce FaceTime data usage?
Switch video calls to audio-only when on mobile data, prefer Wi-Fi for long or group calls, and check Settings > Cellular on your iPhone to see FaceTime's exact usage. You can also disable cellular data for FaceTime entirely.
