Facebook Data Usage Calculator
See how much mobile data Facebook uses from Reels, videos, calls and scrolling — then check it against your monthly data cap.
Facebook is one of the hungriest apps on your phone, and most of that hunger is invisible. A few minutes of scrolling here, a Reel there, a video call in the evening — none of it feels heavy in the moment, but together it can quietly eat a quarter or more of a monthly data plan. If you have ever watched your data balance drop faster than expected, Facebook is one of the first apps worth measuring.
Why Facebook eats more data than you think
Most of Facebook's data cost comes from video. The feed looks like text and photos, but it autoplays clips, loads high-resolution images, and pre-buffers the next Reel before you even swipe to it. Reels are the biggest single drain: at roughly 6 MB per minute, half an hour of Reels a day is about 5.4 GB a month all by itself. Watch videos run a close second, and Messenger video calls use around 8 MB per minute — a 30-minute weekly call adds more than a gigabyte a month. Plain scrolling is lighter at about 2.5 MB per minute, but it adds up because people do it so often.
How this estimate works
This calculator multiplies your daily Facebook habits by realistic per-minute data rates: feed scrolling about 2.5 MB per minute, Reels about 6 MB per minute, Watch videos about 5 MB per minute, Messenger video calls about 8 MB per minute, and audio calls about 0.8 MB per minute. Your video quality setting scales the video numbers — Data Saver roughly halves them, High quality pushes them about 60 percent higher. Weekly call minutes are spread across the days, everything is multiplied by your days per month, and the result is compared with your data cap.
A worked example
Take Sara, who scrolls her feed 45 minutes a day, watches 30 minutes of Reels, 20 minutes of Watch videos, and makes one 30-minute Messenger video call a week, all at standard quality. The math: 45 × 2.5 = 112.5 MB for scrolling, 30 × 6 = 180 MB for Reels, 20 × 5 = 100 MB for Watch, plus 240 ÷ 7 ≈ 34.3 MB a day for calls. That is 426.8 MB a day, about 12,803.6 MB — 12.50 GB — over 30 days. On a 20 GB plan that is 62.5 percent of her cap, with 7.50 GB to spare. Comfortable — but notice that Reels alone (180 MB a day) cost more than scrolling and Watch combined.
Five ways to use less Facebook data
First, turn on Data Saver inside the Facebook app settings — it is the biggest single lever. Second, switch video autoplay to Wi-Fi only so clips never load on mobile data. Third, cut Reels minutes or watch them at a lower quality; they are the densest data per minute. Fourth, prefer audio calls over video calls when video is not needed — audio uses about a tenth of the data. Fifth, do your heavy watching on Wi-Fi and save mobile data for scrolling and messaging.
