Cloud Gaming Bandwidth & Data Calculator

How much data cloud gaming uses per hour, the speed you need for smooth play, and whether your data cap can handle it.

Why cloud gaming eats so much data

Cloud gaming flips the normal download model on its head. Instead of downloading a 100 GB game once and playing it locally, every frame is rendered on a distant server and streamed to you as live video — while every button press travels back upstream. A single 1080p60 session at 25 Mbps burns roughly 11 GB every hour, which means a casual evening of gaming can use more data than streaming two full-length movies.

How this calculator works

Pick your service and streaming quality. Each combination has a typical sustained bitrate: GeForce NOW runs about 15 Mbps at 720p, 25 Mbps at 1080p and 45 Mbps at 4K; Xbox Cloud Gaming needs around 10 Mbps at 720p and 20 Mbps at 1080p; PlayStation Plus Premium needs about 10 Mbps at 720p and 23 Mbps at 1080p; Amazon Luna needs about 10 Mbps at 1080p and 35 Mbps at 4K. Data per hour is bitrate divided by 8 (bits to bytes) times 3,600 seconds. Monthly play is your weekly hours times 4.33 weeks, and the recommended plan speed adds 25% headroom so background devices don't cause stutter.

Worked example

Ayesha plays GeForce NOW at 1080p for 10 hours a week. The stream needs 25 Mbps sustained, which is 11.3 GB per hour. Over 43.3 hours a month that is 487.1 GB. Her 100 Mbps home connection clears the recommended 31.3 Mbps bar easily, and 487 GB is only 48.7% of her 1 TB cap — cloud gaming fits her plan comfortably.

Tips to keep data (and lag) under control

Dropping from 1080p to 720p cuts data use by more than half and is barely noticeable on a phone or small laptop. Use a wired Ethernet connection or sit close to your router — cloud gaming punishes unstable Wi-Fi far more than slow-but-steady speeds. If your plan has a data cap, check it before a long weekend session: 20 hours of 4K play alone can blow past a 500 GB cap. And remember that "up to" speeds in ads are not sustained speeds; run a speed test during peak evening hours to see what you really get.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the Cloud Gaming Bandwidth & Data Calculator

How much data does cloud gaming use per hour?
Roughly 4.5 GB per hour at 720p, 9 to 11 GB at 1080p, and 16 to 20 GB at 4K, depending on the service and game. Fast-moving games compress less efficiently, so they sit at the higher end.
What internet speed do I need for cloud gaming?
About 25 Mbps of sustained speed for smooth 1080p play. Aim for a plan roughly 25% faster than that so other devices on your network don't cause stutter.
Can I play cloud games on a capped mobile hotspot?
A 100 GB cap gives you roughly 9 hours of 1080p play or 22 hours at 720p. Fine for casual sessions, but daily gaming will burn through a capped plan fast.
