Why cloud gaming is hungrier than it looks

Cloud gaming turns the old model upside down: instead of your console or PC rendering the game, a powerful server does it and streams the picture to you — like Netflix, except you control it. That means two things matter at once: enough speed for a smooth picture, and enough monthly data to survive the month. A downloaded game costs you data once. A streamed game costs you data every single second you play. Many gamers only discover this when their data cap runs dry halfway through the month.

How the math works

Every cloud gaming tier is really just a video bitrate in disguise. A 720p stream at 60 frames per second needs about 10 Mbps, 1080p60 needs about 25 Mbps, 1440p60 about 35 Mbps, and 4K60 needs around 75 Mbps. Data per hour follows a simple formula: bitrate × 3,600 seconds ÷ 8 (bits to bytes) ÷ 1,024 (megabytes to gigabytes). So a 25 Mbps stream uses 25 × 3,600 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,024 ≈ 11 GB per hour. Multiply by your daily hours and 30 days for the monthly figure. The calculator also applies the 2× headroom rule: your plan should be at least double the stream's bitrate, because real-world speeds dip below the advertised number and other devices share the line.

Worked example

Take a gamer playing at 1080p60 for 2 hours a day. The stream needs 25 Mbps. Data per hour: 25 × 3,600 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,024 ≈ 10.99 GB. Monthly data: 10.99 × 2 × 30 ≈ 659.2 GB. The recommended plan: 50 Mbps. With a 100 Mbps plan, the verdict is "Comfortable" — the connection holds double the recommended headroom. But notice the data side: on a 1 TB monthly cap, those 659 GB eat two-thirds of the allowance before a single movie is streamed.

Tips for smoother cloud gaming

Use a wired Ethernet connection — Wi-Fi jitter, not raw speed, is the number one cause of stutter. Pause background downloads, cloud photo backups, and 4K streams on other devices before a session. If your plan is tight, dropping from 1080p to 720p more than halves both the speed and the data needed. And if you play on a capped mobile plan, count your hours: cloud gaming can burn a 100 GB allowance in under ten hours at 1080p.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the Cloud Gaming Bandwidth Calculator

How much data does cloud gaming use per hour?
About 4–5 GB per hour at 720p60, 11 GB at 1080p60, 15 GB at 1440p60, and roughly 33 GB at 4K60 — because the video stream runs continuously for the whole session.
What internet speed do I need for cloud gaming?
At minimum the stream's bitrate — 25 Mbps for 1080p60 or 75 Mbps for 4K60 — but twice that is the safe rule, so the stream stays stable when other devices are online.
Can I play cloud games on mobile data?
Yes, on a strong 5G signal it works well, but watch your cap: one hour at 1080p60 uses about 11 GB, so a 100 GB monthly plan lasts roughly nine hours of play.
