Price vs. speed: the comparison that matters

Internet providers love to sell you a big speed number, but the real question is simpler: how much are you paying for each megabit? A "$40 for 50 Mbps" plan and a "$70 for 200 Mbps" plan look similar on a poster — until you divide price by speed. This calculator lines up two plans side by side and scores them on cost per Mbps, cost per GB and data caps, so the better deal is obvious.

The formula

Cost per Mbps = monthly price ÷ advertised speed

If a plan has a data cap, we also compute cost per GB = monthly price ÷ data cap. An unlimited plan automatically wins the data-cap row against any capped rival.

Example

Plan A: $50 for 100 Mbps. Plan B: $65 for 300 Mbps. Cost per Mbps: Plan A = $0.50, Plan B = $0.217. Plan B gives more than twice the speed per dollar — even though it costs more per month.

What the numbers do not show

  • Real-world speeds are usually lower than advertised, especially at peak hours.
  • Watch for installation fees, router rental and price hikes after the promo period.
  • A cheap plan with a tiny data cap can cost more once overage fees kick in.

Use this as a value starting point, then check the fine print before you switch.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the Broadband Plan Comparison Calculator

What is cost per Mbps and why does it matter?
Monthly price divided by advertised speed. It tells you how much each megabit costs, which is the fairest way to compare plans of different sizes.
Is a faster plan always better value?
Not always — but often. A plan that costs 30% more for 3× the speed has a much lower cost per Mbps. The calculator shows this instantly.
Should I worry about data caps?
Yes if you stream a lot. A cheap capped plan can become expensive with overage fees; the calculator's cost-per-GB row exposes this.
