Why action cameras fill memory cards so fast

A phone video looks small because the phone quietly compresses it. Action cameras and drones do the opposite: they record at high bitrates to keep fast motion sharp, which means huge files. A GoPro at 4K60 records around 100 megabits per second — that is 45 gigabytes per hour. Three hours of a mountain-bike ride is 135 GB, more than most phones hold in total. Step up to 5.3K60 at 120 Mbps and the same three hours becomes 162 GB. If you fly or ride all day, one memory card is never enough, and finding out mid-trip is the worst time to learn that.

How this calculator works

The math is one honest multiplication. A bitrate of 100 Mbps means 100 megabits every second; multiply by 3,600 seconds per hour and divide by 8 bits per byte and 1,000 to get gigabytes — 45 GB per hour for that tier. The calculator multiplies your chosen bitrate by your filming hours, then divides by your card size and rounds up: you can't pack half a card, so 135 GB on 128 GB cards means two cards. It also shows the spare space on the last card, so you know whether the next shoot needs another card too.

Worked example

Say you film 3 hours of 4K60 (100 Mbps) on a drone and pack 256 GB cards. The footage needs 100 × 0.45 × 3 = 135.0 GB — one 256 GB card covers it, with 121.0 GB to spare for tomorrow. Now film 5 hours of 5.3K60 (120 Mbps) with 128 GB cards: 120 × 0.45 × 5 = 270.0 GB. That needs 3 cards — you'll fill 2 completely and use 14.0 GB of the last one. Same day out, higher quality, triple the cards: the resolution choice is doing all the damage.

Tips for packing the right cards

First, buy one card size up from what the math says — batteries and weather end shoots early, but cards also slow down when nearly full. Second, prefer fewer big cards over many small ones: swapping cards on a trail or a boat is how cards get lost. Third, check your card's write speed, not just its size — 4K60 needs a V30 or U3 card, and a slow card will stop recording without warning. Finally, offload every evening: a full card in the camera is a day's footage one drop of water away from gone.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the Action Camera Storage Calculator

How much storage does one hour of 4K60 GoPro footage need?
About 45 GB — 100 Mbps × 0.45. Two hours needs roughly 90 GB, so a 128 GB card is the practical minimum for a 4K60 shoot.
What card speed do I need for 4K action camera video?
Look for U3 or V30 rating — that guarantees at least 30 MB/s sustained writes. 5.3K and high-frame-rate modes may need V60/V90 cards.
Is it better to use one big card or several small ones?
One big card is easier and cheaper per gigabyte, but several smaller cards spread the risk — if one card fails, you only lose part of the trip. For paid shoots, two mid-size cards beat one big one.
