8K Streaming Data Calculator

Find out how much data 8K streaming really eats per hour - and what it costs your monthly cap.

Why 8K streaming is a data monster

An 8K picture packs in four times the pixels of 4K and sixteen times the pixels of 1080p, and every one of those pixels has to travel to your screen. Streaming services typically push 8K video at around 80 Mbps, which works out to roughly 35 GB of data for a single hour of watching. Put that next to 4K at about 25 Mbps (around 11 GB per hour), 1080p at roughly 8 Mbps (around 3.5 GB per hour) and 720p at about 4 Mbps (under 2 GB per hour), and the gap is staggering: an evening of 8K viewing can move more data than a full week of HD viewing. On a capped broadband or mobile plan, 8K is not just a luxury upgrade - it is the single fastest way to hit your limit.

How the estimate works

This calculator turns your chosen streaming quality into data per hour with a simple conversion: bitrate in Mbps multiplied by 3,600 seconds per hour, divided by 8 bits per byte, divided by 1,024 megabytes per gigabyte. That gives the gigabytes per hour, which it multiplies by your hours per day and days per month to get your monthly total. Enter your monthly data cap and it shows what percentage of the cap your habit would consume - and how far past the cap you would blow if the total exceeds it. It also compares your chosen tier against 4K at the same hours, so you can see exactly how many times more data 8K (or how much less data HD) really uses.

Worked example: two hours of 8K a night

Take a viewer who streams 2 hours of 8K content every day for a 30-day month on a 1,000 GB plan. At 80 Mbps, one hour uses 80 x 3,600 / 8 / 1,024 = 35.16 GB. Two hours a day for 30 days comes to 2,109.38 GB a month - 210.9% of the 1,000 GB cap, blown by more than 1,100 GB. The same 2 hours a day at 4K would use only 658.59 GB for the month, well inside the cap. The calculator puts it bluntly: 8K uses 3.2x the data of 4K at the same hours. Same movies, same evenings - over three times the data.

Tips to keep streaming data under control

First, reserve 8K for truly uncapped connections and let your player auto-step down to 4K or HD on capped ones. Second, download big titles over home Wi-Fi before watching on the go instead of streaming them over mobile data. Third, check your streaming app's playback settings - many default to the highest quality and will happily chew through 35 GB an hour in the background of a playlist. Fourth, if your TV sits more than a couple of meters away, 4K is visually near-identical to 8K for most viewers, at a third of the data. Fifth, re-run this calculator whenever your habits change; seeing the monthly number before the bill arrives is the easiest way to stay in control.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the 8K Streaming Data Calculator

How much data does one hour of 8K streaming use?
About 35 GB per hour at a typical 8K bitrate of 80 Mbps. That is roughly 3.2x what 4K uses (about 11 GB per hour) and about 10x what 1080p uses (about 3.5 GB per hour).
How does the calculator turn Mbps into gigabytes?
It multiplies the bitrate in Mbps by 3,600 seconds in an hour, divides by 8 to turn bits into bytes, and divides by 1,024 to turn megabytes into gigabytes. So 80 Mbps x 3,600 / 8 / 1,024 = about 35.16 GB per hour, then it multiplies by your hours per day and days per month.
How can I watch 8K without blowing my data cap?
Save 8K for uncapped connections like home fiber or unlimited plans, and let your TV or app auto-step down to 4K on capped networks. Download big titles over Wi-Fi before watching on the go, cap your app's playback quality, and re-run this calculator after changing habits to see the monthly number drop.
