5G Data Drain Calculator

Does 5G use more data? Estimate how much extra mobile data a 5G connection burns versus 4G — and whether your plan still fits.

Why 5G quietly eats your data plan

Your 5G connection does not charge per megabyte, but it changes your habits. Everything loads faster, so you watch more, scroll more and download more. Streaming apps notice the faster line too - and quietly bump you from HD to 4K, which uses almost five times the data per hour. Meanwhile your phone refreshes more apps in the background while you are out. None of this arrives as a warning. It just arrives as an overage.

How the estimate works

The calculator splits your usage into two parts. First, streaming: your daily streaming hours times a per-hour rate - 0.7 GB for SD, 1.5 GB for HD. On 5G with auto-quality on, SD jumps to HD and HD jumps to 4K at 7 GB per hour. Second, everything else: messages, maps, social apps and downloads. Usage studies show this background part grows about 25% on 5G, because faster connections mean more auto-playing video and heavier background refresh. The calculator adds both parts, checks your plan cap, and prices any overage at a typical $10 per GB.

Worked example: Sara's 5G switch

Sara uses 60 GB a month on 4G and streams about 1 hour of HD video a day. That is roughly 45 GB of streaming and 15 GB of everything else. On 5G with auto-quality on, her streams jump from 1.5 GB/h to 7 GB/h - 210 GB of streaming alone - while her other usage grows 25% to 18.75 GB. New total: about 228.8 GB a month, 168.8 GB more than before (+281.3%). On her 100 GB plan that is 128.8 GB over - about $1,288 in overage at $10/GB. The fix costs nothing: locking her streaming apps to HD wipes out most of the drain.

Five ways to keep 5G cheap

1. Cap video quality to HD in Netflix, YouTube and TikTok settings. 2. Turn off video auto-play on social apps. 3. Restrict background app refresh to Wi-Fi only. 4. Download playlists, podcasts and maps on Wi-Fi before you leave. 5. Watch your first 5G bill closely - most carriers let you set a data warning at 80% of your cap.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the 5G Data Drain Calculator

Does 5G itself use more data for the same video?
No - 5G is actually more efficient per megabyte. The extra usage comes from apps serving higher quality automatically, and from you browsing, streaming and downloading more on a faster connection.
How do I stop 5G from draining my data?
Lock streaming apps to HD or lower, turn off auto-playing video, restrict background app refresh to Wi-Fi, and download playlists and maps before leaving home.
Will 5G always push me over my cap?
Not if you are a light user. But if you stream a lot and your apps auto-upgrade to 4K, a 5G connection can easily double or triple your monthly usage.
