“h1″ class=”entry-title”>Pakistan Weather Alert 2026: Widespread Dust Storms, Thunderstorms, and Heavy Rain Expected from June 16th to June 20th

Pakistan is bracing for a significant shift in weather patterns as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasts widespread dust storms, windstorms, and rain-thunderstorms across multiple regions of the country starting Tuesday, June 16, 2026. This change is attributed to moist currents from the Arabian Sea moving into the upper and central parts of Pakistan, coinciding with the approach of a westerly wave. The PMD has issued a nationwide weather advisory, warning of potential heavy rainfall, isolated hailstorms, landslides in vulnerable northern areas, and urban flooding in major cities. Citizens are urged to stay alert and take necessary precautions as this spell of unsettled weather is expected to persist intermittently until June 20th. This developing weather situation underscores the increasing volatility of Pakistan’s climate, a trend that has led to more frequent extreme weather events in recent years. The latest meteorological updates indicate a dynamic atmospheric setup, with the potential for significant disruption across various sectors, from agriculture to daily commutes, as reported by Veltrix News.

The approaching weather system is a complex interplay of atmospheric phenomena, with the westerly wave expected to intensify the activity from June 16th onwards, particularly in the upper and central regions. This means that areas accustomed to the prevailing high temperatures of early June may soon experience a drastic change. The PMD has specifically highlighted the risk of strong winds, lightning, and hailstorms which could damage infrastructure, including solar panels and electric poles, and has cautioned about potential landslides in the mountainous regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir. Authorities are on alert to manage potential urban flooding in major cities such as Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Lahore, and Faisalabad. Farmers are advised to adjust their agricultural activities to mitigate potential losses, while tourists and travelers are urged to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary movement during intense weather spells.

Provincial Weather Breakdown

Punjab

Punjab province is set to experience a significant weather shift from June 16 to 20, with the PMD forecasting scattered dust storms, windstorms, and rain-thunderstorms. Isolated heavy rainfall and hailstorms are also anticipated. Cities including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Narowal, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Bahawalpur, Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Rahim Yar Khan are in the forecast zone. Lahore and Faisalabad are at particular risk of urban flooding due to anticipated heavy rainfall. Temperatures in Punjab during this period will likely drop from the current highs of around 38-41°C to more moderate levels during and after the rain spells, though humidity will increase significantly. The average high temperatures in Punjab in June typically range between 89°F and 109°F (32°C to 43°C), with this forecast indicating a temporary departure from the extreme heat.

Sindh

Upper districts of Sindh, including Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, Khairpur, Dadu, Ghotki, Kashmore, Shikarpur, and Shaheed Benazirabad, are expected to face dust storms, windstorms, and thunderstorms from June 16 to 20. Karachi and its surrounding areas may experience dust storms accompanied by light rain. While the southern coastal areas might see milder effects, the interior of Sindh is likely to experience temperatures in the range of 40-41°C before the storm systems arrive. Humidity levels in Karachi are expected to remain relatively high, potentially increasing with any rain. The region has been experiencing intense heatwaves, with temperatures reaching between 47°C and 51°C in some areas, exacerbating water shortages and impacting crops.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP)

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is forecast to receive scattered dust storms, windstorms, and rain-thunderstorms, along with isolated heavy downpours and hailstorms, between June 16 and 20. Districts such as Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Bajaur, Shangla, Battagram, Buner, Kohat, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan, Peshawar, and Mardan are among those expected to be affected. The PMD has warned of potential landslides in vulnerable mountainous areas of KP due to the expected heavy rainfall. Temperatures in Peshawar, which have been around 105°F (40°C) to 107°F (41°C) during the day in mid-June, are expected to decrease with the onset of rain, accompanied by increased humidity.

Balochistan

Northern and northeastern districts of Balochistan, including Zhob, Sherani, Ziarat, Kohlu, Naseerabad, Quetta, Qila Saifullah, Qila Abdullah, Harnai, Sibbi, Barkhan, Khuzdar, and Dera Bugti, are likely to experience dust storms, windstorms, and rain-thunderstorms from June 16 to 20. Isolated heavy showers and hailstorms are also possible in these areas. Quetta and surrounding areas may see daytime temperatures in the mid-30s Celsius (around 93-95°F) before the storms, with overnight lows in the low 20s Celsius. Sibi, known for its extreme June heat with average highs around 118°F (48°C), may also see some relief from the intense heat as the weather system approaches, though specific forecasts for Sibi indicate continued very high temperatures.

PDMA / National Disaster Management Advisories & Safety Guidelines

  • Stay Informed: Monitor weather updates from the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) and local authorities.
  • Secure Property: Ensure loose objects, especially on rooftops and balconies, are secured to prevent damage from strong winds. This includes billboards, solar panels, and electric poles, which are at risk of damage.
  • Travel Advisories: Avoid unnecessary travel, especially to hilly and mountainous regions, during the peak of the storm. Be aware of potential road closures due to landslides or urban flooding.
  • Urban Flood Preparedness: Residents in low-lying areas and major cities prone to urban flooding (e.g., Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Lahore, Faisalabad) should take precautions and be prepared for potential waterlogging and disruptions.
  • Landslide Warnings: Travelers and residents in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir should be extremely cautious due to the heightened risk of landslides.
  • Heatwave Precautions (Before and After Storms): While the storms may bring some relief, extreme heat is still a concern in many parts of the country. Stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, and take precautions against heatstroke, especially in Sindh and southern Punjab where above-normal temperatures are projected to persist beyond this storm.
  • Agricultural Planning: Farmers should plan their activities in line with the weather forecast to protect crops from potential damage caused by strong winds, hailstorms, and heavy rainfall.
  • Health Awareness: Be aware of potential health risks associated with dust storms and air pollution, which can be exacerbated during such weather events.

Agricultural Impact & Aviation/Traffic Updates

The current weather forecast poses a mixed impact on Pakistan’s agricultural sector. While the impending rains might offer some respite from the prevailing heat, the accompanying dust storms, strong winds, and hailstorms present a significant risk to standing crops, vegetables, and orchards across the country. Farmers, particularly in Punjab and Sindh, need to be vigilant and take proactive measures to safeguard their harvests. Sugarcane, rice, cotton, and maize crops, crucial for the Kharif season, are particularly vulnerable to water stress if rainfall is significantly below normal in the long term, though the immediate rainfall may be beneficial. However, the PMD also warns of a potential increase in vector-borne diseases like dengue due to fluctuating weather patterns.

Regarding aviation and traffic, the PMD’s advisory highlights potential disruptions. Strong winds, dust storms, and heavy rain can significantly reduce visibility, leading to delays or cancellations of flights and disruptions to road and motorway travel. Motorway authorities are expected to issue specific advisories regarding visibility and safety conditions. Travelers are strongly advised to check for real-time updates before embarking on journeys, especially those involving inter-city or long-distance travel.
